BURLINGTON — The Burlington Board of Health subcommittee directed staff to draft kratom regulations for full board consideration on September 8, 2026. Chairperson Gayle DaMore and Board Member Orysia Hanushevsky, with Director of Public Health Susan Lumenello and Assistant Director Michael Greene, discussed the approach taken by approximately 21 Massachusetts communities, of which all but one have enacted full bans. The subcommittee agreed that banning synthetic kratom only or restricting sales to adults 21 and older would be unenforceable due to mislabeling and lack of FDA approval.

Lumenello will draft comprehensive regulations and may invite Massachusetts Association of Health Boards legal counsel Cheryl Sbarra, Esq., to answer questions at the September board meeting.
