Government Review Committee · Meeting of June 23, 2026

BURLINGTON — The Burlington Government Review Committee unanimously renamed the Ways and Means Committee to the Finance Committee throughout the charter and reviewed financial procedures in Article 5. Chair Betsey Hughes and members agreed that vacancy language for elected officers needed clarification, endorsing a proposal allowing remaining Select Board members to call a special election or requiring one if 200 registered voters petition at least 100 days before the next regular election. The committee confirmed department budgets are due by December 15 and that the proposed budget and capital improvement program must be made available to the public at least 20 days before Town Meeting.

A town survey found residents favor elected boards over appointed ones, and members proposed precinct meetings to educate Town Meeting attendees.
