School Wellness Advisory Committee advances health standards toward School Committee approval

School Committee · Meeting of May 13, 2026

Burlington School Wellness Advisory Committee recommends new state frameworks. The 14-member committee, including Dr. Marwa El-Sabbahy, took a consensus vote on a crosswalk aligning the 1999 Massachusetts Comprehensive Health Frameworks with the 2023 Comprehensive Health and Physical Education Frameworks for grades 9 through 12.

One standard addressing valid sources of sexual health information was removed from proposed Grade 6-8 power standards and deferred for revisit next year. The committee recommended all standards proceed to the School Committee for final approval, after which the PE and Health Department will begin curriculum-writing work this summer using the new 2023 standards.
