Town Meeting Funds Fire Contract, Passes Zoning Changes

Town Meeting · Meeting of September 28, 2026

Burlington Town Meeting funds fire contract, passes four zoning changes, postpones a contested bylaw fight. Assistant Town Administrator DiNizio outlined the three-year firefighters contract, with raises of 3 percent, 3 percent and 2 percent and no added tax impact. Members renewed a 20-year cell tower lease at 27 Blanchard Road worth $73,560 annually, over Planning Board Chair Brenda Rappaport's objection that its 2.5 percent escalator "does not keep up with inflation." The Burlington Government Review Committee previewed a draft town charter headed for a January 25 vote, revealing survey data showing two-thirds of responding town meeting members now favor a recall provision the body rejected in 2024.

Members appropriated $271,861.53 in MWRA sewer interest and approved rezoning 49 Middlesex Turnpike for a retail jewelry store. The night's sharpest fight, over defining "structure" in the zoning code, ended in postponement after John Eilert warned the word appears 310 times in the bylaw and could unintentionally void setback rules townwide.
