School Committee · Meeting of October 8, 2026
School Wellness Committee endorsed grades 4-5 sexual health standards unanimously and voted 11-4 to recommend five standards for grade 8. The 17-member committee reviewed lessons from the state-approved Rights, Respect, and Responsibility curriculum selected by district staff over the summer. Grades 4-5 instruction addresses puberty with gender-separated lessons, while grade 8 covers decision-making and sexual health consequences using co-ed instruction.
Committee members were split on the grade 8 approach; some worried it was too detailed or invasive. Both sets of recommendations will go to the School Committee for final approval.
