South Burlington Board of Abatement hears three tax-relief cases worth $22,000

Other Committee · Meeting of May 14, 2026

BURLINGTON — South Burlington Board of Abatement hears three hardship tax-relief requests totaling roughly $22,000 at its May 14 session. The board, chaired by a member identified only as Chris, took sworn testimony in three separate hearings before voting unanimously to enter deliberative session. A commercial property owner identified as Lam sought abatement of approximately $8,514 in accumulated interest and penalties tied to COVID-era business closures at 2026 Williston Road, saying she had already paid down a $30,000 delinquency through a structured payment plan.

Michelle Starr and William Warnock of 69 Bartlett Bay Road requested a full-year tax refund of $10,527.15 after a burst toilet line flooded their home in June 2025, leaving it uninhabitable with mold throughout, no flooring, and walls stripped to studs; their insurer Allstate settled for $276,000 against a contractor's $800,000 reconstruction estimate. Condo owner Rebecca Loeb sought $3,020.53 in tax relief after a neighbor's fire on May 20, 2025 forced her from her 425 Dorset Street unit for nearly a year, leaving her paying dual housing costs and utility bills of up to $5,000 per month for the damaged complex. Written decisions are due within 30 days.
