Burlington School Committee weighs vestibules against AC in capital warrant revisions

BURLINGTON — March 25, 2025 — Burlington School Committee voted 4-0 to establish a revolving fund account for the district's Community Parent Advisory Council and reviewed capital warrant options trimmed from $3.8 million to roughly $2.9 million at its March 25 meeting. Chair Katherine Bond and the four-member quorum debated whether to prioritize security vestibules at Francis Wyman and Pine Glen elementary schools or air conditioning improvements at Francis Wyman, with Director of Operations Bob Bregoli noting the vestibule project carries the stronger safety case while a full Francis Wyman HVAC build-out, excluding the auditorium, would cost approximately $600,000 for the common-space wing alone and an additional $1.6 million to $1.8 million for the auditorium. Superintendent Eric Conte disclosed that approximately $600,000 in network equipment eligible for a roughly 50 percent federal E-Rate rebate had been shifted into the school district's capital request, at the request of Town Manager John Dionisio. The overall FY26 operating budget came in at a 7.4 percent increase over fiscal year 2025, leaving an estimated $1.8 million to $1.9 million to be cut before reaching the committee's 4.5 percent guideline. A revised capital proposal is expected at the April 1 subcommittee meeting.
