BURLINGTON — The Burlington School Committee approved a non-discrimination policy update adding immigration and citizenship status as protected categories while debating new Protect Act procedures. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Chen said the state's Protect Act, developed with the Massachusetts Association of School Committees, largely formalizes existing practice requiring judicial warrants before releasing a student.
Member Jeremy Brooks said he was concerned about "increased exposure for staff members" asked to intervene in confrontational situations. The committee also reallocated $1,705.98 from inactive student club accounts to Principal Sullivan's hardship fund and split $6,801.50 in unclaimed Class of 2026 funds among the classes of 2027 through 2030. Member Christine Monaco pressed Director of Mental Health Chrissy Concesion on restraint frequency and seclusion reporting timelines under new state rules.
All votes passed 5-0-0, except the Aug. 18 minutes, approved 4-0-1 with one abstention.
