Town Meeting · Meeting of May 13, 2026

Burlington Town Meeting approved a $5,746,065 fiscal 2027 capital budget and rejected a bid to cut funding for a new Council on Aging director position. Member Bob Young's amendment to strip $45,205 from the department failed after town staff member Lawler said the funding covers a planned overlap before director Marge Yetman's retirement, calling it "a social service position" rather than a private-sector hire. Member Alex Rutfield countered that six months is the minimum needed to learn "Burlington's way of doing things." Town Meeting also approved $250,000 for the town's LIFT ride-subsidy program, now averaging 3,600 to 4,000 rides a month, and $200,000 to design Simons Park renovations estimated near $3.8 million.

A $100,000 request for a Historical Commission storage shed was postponed to 7 p.m. Monday, May 18, after no commission representative appeared to answer members' questions.
