Burlington School Committee Approves $250,000 Transfer to Retirement Reserve Fund

BURLINGTON — August 19, 2025 — Burlington School Committee approved a $250,000 transfer into its accrued liability reserve fund and advanced two new student survey oversight policies to a September 9 vote. The committee voted 4-0 Tuesday to move the funds from unspent fiscal year 2025 salary accounts into a reserve established in 2021 to cover vacation time owed to retiring employees; total district accrued leave liability stands at roughly $1.2 million, with the fund now expected to hold approximately $1 million after the transfer. Two draft policies — one specific to the Youth Risk Behavior Survey and one covering all other non-educational student screenings — received first readings; both would require full School Committee approval before any survey is administered and mandate public posting of all survey instruments year-round, with the committee choosing opt-in or opt-out procedures case by case. Director of Student Services Lisa Chen closed the meeting with the announcement that Burlington has been awarded more than $450,000 through a state literacy grant that Superintendent Eric Conti said requires no new ask of town taxpayers.
