School Committee · Meeting of June 9, 2026

BURLINGTON — The Burlington School Committee deadlocked 2-2 on a motion to reject new 2023 health and physical education standards, leaving the 1999 curriculum in place for now. Superintendent Dr. Eric Conti told members "the process hasn't been rushed, it is just incomplete," after Assistant Superintendent Dr.

Lisa Chen reported a 28-member Wellness Committee had finished all K-12 health and PE standards but tabled 21 sexual-health standards for further review next year. Members Melissa Massardo and Jeremy Brooks voted to reject the update; Chris Monaco and Vice Chair Meghan Nawoichik voted against, producing the tie that sent the item back to the June 23 agenda. Separately, Parks and Recreation Director Brendan Egan and consultant Brian Luccini asked the committee to consider herbicide use on two school fields to protect a $700,000 baseball field renovation; member Chris Monaco requested a full product list before any discussion of a policy change.

The committee also approved a $3,891 stipend for the South Asian Student Association and accepted a furniture donation from the Simon Youth Foundation, which awarded an $18,000 scholarship to one Evening Academy graduate.
