BURLINGTON --

TOWN -- The Recreation Commission's Oct. 19 meeting included an update on the Marshall Simonds Park field renovation, which was funded through a town meeting warrant approving $4.77 million from an original $6.5 million project scope. Commissioners amended minutes to note an estimated $380,000 overage will be returned to the town, with officials cautioning the figure is an estimate because the project has not yet formally closed. Recreation staff reported that maintenance crews have completed fall overseeding and fertilization of town athletic fields and are now prepping baseball and softball fields for spring to avoid weather-related delays next year. Crews also plan to level and hydro-seed uneven turf in the Rotary Park outfield, and are working with Corbett Irrigation to standardize irrigation valves and heads at Upper Rahanis, following earlier work at Rotary and Marvin fields; a new irrigation zone was added near Patriot Road. At Simonds Park, the town is extending batting-cage fencing by six feet to accommodate an updated cage system similar to one installed previously at Francis Wyman. The town's baseball/softball association, identified in the meeting as BBSA, is covering materials and installation while the town pays for the fencing. Commissioners also discussed longer-term capital plans, including possible pickleball and tennis courts at the soon-to-be-vacated police station site on Middlesex Turnpike, and the need to resurface and refence the town's existing pickleball courts, where cracks have developed.

YOUTH LEAGUES -- The Burlington Hockey and Skating Association said it is collecting interest from families for middle school hockey at the fifth through eighth grade levels, with games typically played on Sunday nights, and that its Jr. Devils registration remains open. The association also said its 2026-27 game and practice schedule has been posted for member teams.
