Teachers blast end of early-release pilot
Burlington teachers publicly confronted the School Committee over its decision to end a one-year elementary early-release pilot.
School Committee · Meeting of May 26, 2026
Burlington teachers publicly confronted the School Committee over its decision to end a one-year elementary early-release pilot. BEA president Sean Musselman said the union sought "a public explanation" after the committee rejected a memorandum of agreement extending the collaborative-planning schedule. Teacher Crystal Muse-Keating said the curriculum work exceeded the total 28 hours of early release time and "there is not enough time to do this work" implementing the district's new CKLA curriculum.
Chair Katherine Bond said the panel believes "students need more time with teachers, not less" and will address scheduling in upcoming contract talks. Member Melissa Massardo said she "strongly support[s]" the rejected agreement. The committee separately voted 5-0 to approve a 2027 France trip and opened a first reading of new health and PE standards reviewed by a 28-member advisory committee.
